GATE 2014: Last minute tips for mechanical engineering

GATE is one of the most popular and difficult entrance exams students hailing form the science stream have sit for.
GATE is considered to be a gateway for students who seek admission to various post-graduate programmes in Indian higher education institutes, with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other government agencies.
The recent trend of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs ) hiring candidates at entry-level positions on the basis of their GATE scores has led to an increase in the number of students appearing for the exam, in turn raising the bar of competition.
With the increasing competition, GATE aspirants need to be on their toes making the best of every minute they have to prepare for the exam.
Here are a few handy last minute tips for mechanical engineering to help students push the GATE wide open!
First let us have a look at the paper pattern:
There will be a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks, out of which 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA).
GATE 2014 would contain questions of two different types in various papers:
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. These questions are objective in nature, and each will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer(s).
Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections. For these questions the answer is a real number, to be entered by the candidate using the virtual keypad. No choices will be shown for this type of questions.
Last minute tips:
  • Concentrate on the following important topics for mechanical engineering: Energy Systems, Aerospace, Thermal Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Design.
  • Students can also refer to the following books for preparation: Fundamentals of Classed Thermodynamics-Van Wylen, Heat and Mass Transfer-R. Yadav and Energy Conversion-Sukhalmoy
  • Normally GATE paper consists of that questions that are related to specialisation in M. Tech and M.E.
  • When you start your preparation, just concentrate on concept not on theory derivation.
  • Try and solve as many past year question papers as you can. It will give you an insight into the kind of questions which are generally asked.
  • Solve mock test papers available on IIT-Kharagpur website as it will help you strategies your time management techniques.
  • Make short memory cards to help in last-minute revision.
  • Devote more time towards revising topics which have more weightage in comparison to others.
  • Refer to specific books recommended for GATE instead of trying to read any book that comes your way!
  • Avoid studying overnight on the last day before the exam.
  • Do not start a new topic at the last minute! Instead revise the topics you have already completed.
  • Most importantly keep your calm and don't panic.
